市场上常见的开平机按加工能力大致可以分为三类：中板开平、薄板大开平、小开平，基本可以满足各类加工要求。
中板开平机：
是专门加工热轧卷的设备，一般加工能力为厚度3mm到14mm。早期的中板开平机只能开至大宽度为1500mm的热轧卷，随着宽幅热轧卷的推出，如今各加工点所上的热轧开平机一般都能开2000mm宽的热轧卷。部分热轧开平机还带有切边功能。
薄板大开平机：
一般能够加工0.3mm～3.0mm厚度的冷轧卷。早期薄板开平机一般只能加工至大宽度为1300mm的冷轧卷，但随着1500mm的冷轧卷的广泛应用，1500mm宽度开平机很快就占据了市场。冷轧开平机加工能力主要体现在矫平、表面保护、跺料等方面。
小开平：
一般指加工至大宽度为800mm以下冷轧卷的开平机，加工厚度为0.3~3.0mm。和薄板大开机一样，它主要加工高要求的冷轧卷，尤其是对表面保护要求，一般更高，其产品一般都是定开的薄板，广泛用于冲压、准确裁减等方面。
